#Hashtag Assignment

  1. When I searched #sm in Twitter, I got a lot of tweets that were about business and entrepreneurship, or made by marketers. They usually would link to an article that would be of interest to someone who is in interested in marketing themselves, or their business online. Four of the tweets I came across also had the hashtag #marketing, which shows a big link between social media and marketing. I also noted that every single tweet that included #sm had a link to an article on an outside website. Most were articles about how to tweet or market more effectively for your audience, using social media. For example: @steven_forbes tweeted: ‘5 fundamentals of a Social-Media action plan’, then included a link to the site that had the article. The article was on a site named entrepreneur.com. Another example was @bryankramer: ‘Show your biggest fans that you are listening – this could be your special sauce.’ The link attached to that tweet sent users to his marketing blog, and the article talked about how to have exclusive services for certain clients. None of the tweets I came across on my search included a photograph or a video, they were all links to articles. I see a huge amount of interest in social media as a powerful marketing tool.

  2. Like Megan, I found that most of the tweets led to outside articles providing information about social media sites. Some of the tweets were links to news articles discussing such things as the intangibles associated with social media marketing and the need for legislation related to cybercrimes perpetrated via social media. There were also several posts offering advice on how to use social media better, how to deal with negative reviews (that one was pretty funny) or a poor post. There were links to images on instagram and visual.ly as well. The one I found the most interesting/effective was posted by @terrinakamura and it was titled "Social changes through Facebook + other #SM networks". Most of the posters were indivisuals but there were some from consultants or businesses.

  3. Megan and Anne-Marie: thanks for sharing your findings. I think you both hit on a key aspect of Twitter - the ability to link "out". Yes Twitter has a constrictive limit (140 characters) but with the ability to link out to interesting articles, images or videos, the tweeter can actually say a lot in a few words. That's part of perfecting our transliterate skills - to craft interesting and pertinent tweets (i.e. useful information in a very concise form).

    - I found that a variety of social media savvy people/companies tweet using #SM
    to share resources, strategies and expertise to others interested in social
    media--mostly via links to websites, blogs, articles, etc.

    - There were some re-occurring topics, mostly on tips for maximizing your
    presence on social media.

    - All of the 20 #SM tweets that I examined linked to other sources (websites,
    blogs, etc.)

    - None of the tweets that I looked at linked to photos or videos, however when
    I delved deeper in to the #SM hashtag there are links to videos however it's
    not as common as links to other websites, blogs, etc.

Catching up on our class activities, I found when looking at tweets from #SM they are either tweets on how to avoid a social media faux pas or how to set yourself apart from the rest to truly attract your target audience. Tweets also included the importance of building trust and relationships to keep your audience/followers engaged.
    All tweets have links/citations to articles that delve into how social media is more about sociology & psychology and less about technology or to blogs that that explain/work towards validating the tweeted lead.
